Face Paint Instructions

  1. Put on the headband – this hold hair out of their face and starts everything off on an exciting note.
    • At this time, write down the sale on your notebook while the item and price is fresh in your mind. Then, when the customer pays, add a check mark to the sale entry.
  2. Load your sponges well: spray with lots of water and RUB the sponge on the face paint cake to pick up colors.
  3. DAB sponge on the face rapidly: pinch the sponge in your hand and dab firmly and quickly onto face to get good full coverage of color. Ensure you swivel the sponge as you go around the face to keep the colors in line and not mix them into a muddy mess. Sometimes it’s easier to press more on the outer colors first around the face, then add the inner colors on the eyes, nose, inner cheeks, and then upper lip.
    • TIP: Sponge Paint all the way to lower cheeks / mouth, like the pictures!
    • TIP: If paint isn’t showing up: Sponge is too dry – spray sponge with more water, rub on the face paint cake to pickup more color, and go back to dabbing face. The re-moistened sponge should now transfer paint better onto the face.
    • TIP: Use a dryer sponge for over the eyes so it doesn’t drip into the eyes. All of the designs have paint over the eyelids- first use your fully loaded sponge to get color all around the face (forehead, cheeks) and then go over the eyes and the sponge will be drier by then (tell the kid “ok close your eyes, lets get all that nice color on your little __kitty/buddy/unicorn/etc__ eyes”)
  4. Using Stencils: Use a dryer sponge for stencil. This keeps the stencil lines crisp and avoids the paint dripping/bleeding through.
    • Mermaid: Apply the scales stencil first, then using the same sponge add the rest of the color (the “mermaid makeup”)
    • Snow Leopard: Make sure the base white paint is fully dry. Do not get the sponge too wed for black because it’s a very bold color. If hte black cake is already wet, you may not even need to spray the sponge before picking up the black color. the sponge a semi-circle of leopard spots around each eye from the forehead onto the cheek.
    • Princess: Make sure the base pink/purple paint is fully dry. Then load up the sponge with white and dap the hearts stencil onto each cheek and forehead.
  5. Painting on details: Allow the face paint to dry before adding brush details! Use fan to dry the base paint before brush or stencil if necessary.
    • TIP: Shape paint brush bristles to a point when loading with paint: do this by rolling the brush on the paint and loading sideways. If you just jam the brush on the paint the bristles splay and you won’t get clean lines
  6. Talk cheerfully to the child as you go to let the kid know what’s happening. This makes it fun and comfortable for the young child, and you’ll probably get a good tip this way! Say things like:
“Let’s get all those __unicorn/kitty/etc__ colors on you!”
“haha I know, this is the tickly part”
“wow you’re pretty good at getting face paint”
“Gotta let you dry now and then we’ll put your __cat fuzz/unicorn swirls/spider webs/etc on!”

“now I’ll add your cute little heart-shaped ___kitty/tiger/leopard__ nose!”
“ok stay real still, wow good job” “use your spidey senses to stay real still and I’ll put your spidey-webs on”
    • TIP: DON’t ask the kid questions like “what is your name?” or “are you having a fun day?” or anything like that. Questions make kids feel on-the-spot and nervous, as well as slows down your progress, and makes the kid move their mouth and fidget. Stick to just talking positively and peacefully about what you’re doing as you go, and allow the kid to sit and relax.
  7. Watch and memorize the face paint tutorials so you know the 12 designs well. If you do a face paint that’s way different or missing parts, the kid will be sad that it’s different from the signs or different from their friend’s painted by another artist. Please carefully watch the tutorial videos and know the designs well.
Take notice of the correct application steps, note which parts are outlined, little details like the kitty cheeks are white sponged, tiger has fangs, spirderman outer face ISN’T outlined in black, etc.

Temporary Tattoo Instructions:

Glitter Instructions:

  1. Keep tattoo books upright so tattoos done fall out. Even keep the book slightly upright when flipping through pages.
  2. Keep tattoo bin lid on to protect tattoos and stencils from spills and rain. Even moisture in the air can be damaging, so this is very important to remember!
  3. Make sure you have the right design: Open the front cover of the book, find the tattoo, and ask the customer – you want this $14 Butterfly? noting the price and showing them the stencil helps ensure you are applying the correct butterfly.
    • At this time, write down the sale on your notebook while the item and price is fresh in your mind. Then, when the customer pays, add a check mark to the sale entry.
    • Make sure the customer knows they’re getting a glitter tattoo. Sometimes customers are confused thinking the design they picked is a blue/black Jagua. Help them find a similar Jagua design if that’s the case.
  4. Peel off the white backing from the black stencils
    • For more intricate tattoos, this step can be difficult. Take your time, ensuring the stencil doesn’t get tangled up. If it gets tangled and you can’t unstick it, or if it rips, throw the stencil away and get a new one, trying again.
    • if it has a clear top layer, leave it on until the tattoo is pressed onto the skin, then. Then carefully peel the clear layer off leaving only the black stencil on the skin.
  5. Gently shake the glue dabber bottles lightly at the beginning of the day, and before applying tattoos. If you do not, the glue will separate and the tattoo will crack and not last long. Don’t shake too vigorously or they will bubble up.
  6. Dab the glue on in a thin white layer, starting from the top and working down. Work quickly, because you must peel off the black stencil before the glue dries clear.
    • If it’s a large stencil, you can start dabbing the glue at the top, and peel the stencil off as you go in a few sections to make sure it’s peeled before drying.
  7. Allow the tattoo to dry until fully clear with fan.
    • While waiting to dry, ask the customer what colors they want with this exact wording:
      • “Do you want rainbow, or do you want to pick 2 or 3 of your favourite colors?” We use this wording because it prevents people from being like “I’ll have the lips red, the eyes blue, the hair yellow, ect.” glitter tattoos never look good this way and it’s difficult to get the colors exactly where they ask. By suggesting they choose colors with that wording, the tattoo looks great and the customer is happy. If they start to ask for it that way, say “oh it doesn’t really work like that, why don’t you pick a few of your favorites? The mermaid looks great in rainbow, or maybe some nice ocean blue and green? If they still insist, just do your best to do what they ask.
  8. Applying glitter: Using a puff bottle, squeeze the bottle to puff the glitter onto the tattoo. With the rainbow wand, tap the glitter out with your finger.
  9. Rub the glitter into the glue with your finger, then brush the excess off with the brush.
  10. Give them or their parent an instruction card – say “here’s an instruction card – it’s all dry and waterproof, just avoid sunscreen and lotions, and pat dry with your towel after swimming”

Other Glitter Instructions:

  • Keep the glue/ink bottles out of the sun: When they get too hot, they bubble up and run out of the bottle too quickly. To keep out of sun, move the kit, or cover with the sweater or hat from the manager bin.
